A wise woman once said that the four most important words in any relationship are “I hear you.” These four little words can make a world of difference in our relationships with the people we love.
When we feel heard, we feel seen, understood, and valued. Our partner is on our team, and we can rely on them. But when we don’t feel heard, we can feel alone, misunderstood, and unimportant.
The good news is that communication is a skill that can be learned. And like any skill, the more we practice it, the better we become at it.
Here are some tips for improving communication with your partner:
1. Listen with your ears and heart. When your partner is speaking, listen to what they’re saying. Don’t just wait for your turn to speak. Pay attention to their body language, tone of voice, and the words they’re using.
2. Ask questions. If you need help to understand what your partner is saying, ask them to explain it. Asking questions also shows that you’re interested in what they have to say.
3. Repeat back what you heard. This is called reflecting. Reflecting to your partner what they’ve said shows that you were listening and that you understand. It also helps clarify things if you’re unsure you understood correctly.
4. Avoid judgment. Try to resist the urge to judge or criticize what your partner is saying. Being judgmental puts our partners on the defensive and makes them less likely to open up to us.
5. Take breaks. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or frustrated, take a break. Go for a walk, take a few deep breaths, or just step away from the conversation for a few minutes. Returning to the conversation is important when you’re both feeling calm and ready to connect.
6. Be patient. Learning how to communicate effectively takes time and practice. Be patient with yourself and your partner while learning this new skill. By following these tips, you can start to improve communication in your relationship. Just remember, it takes two people to communicate. So both of you will need to be committed to the process
Wishing you all this best!
